K-State dumps UMass–Audio

Manhattan, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Jake Waters passed for 115 yards and two scores, and Kip Daily returned one of his two interceptions 38 yards for a touchdown, as the Kansas State Wildcats wrap up non-conference play with a 37-7 win over the UMass Minutemen in front of nearly 53,000 fans at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Despite having the ball for a little over four minutes in the first quarter, the Wildcats trailed 7-6. Their first score came on Daily’s interception return to paydirt. 

 K-State took the lead back for good in the second period with three touchdowns, starting off with a one-yard quarterback sneak by Daniel Sams with 9:14 left before halftime, the second was the first career touchdown by running back Robert Rose, who scored from 26 yards out with 3:45 remaining before halftime, and just before the break, Waters found John Hubert wide open for a 43-yard pass to help the Cats lead 27-6 at the break. 

In the second half, the lone touchdown came on a 50-yard pass play from Waters to freshman fullback Glenn Gronkowski at the 9:27 mark of the third quarter. Jack Cantele booted in his career-best 42-yard field goal with 13:29 remaining to make the final 37-7.

Kansas State rushed for a season-high 329 yards, led by Hubert’s 118 yards. The Wildcats did out-gain the Minutemen overall 456-309. 

After Saturday, K-State finished their non-conference portion of their schedule with a 2-1 record, and will visit Texas Saturday night in their Big 12 opener. Pre-game coverage from the K-State Sports Network begins at 5 pm, with a 7 pm kickoff in Austion on KSKL Mix 94.
