Jean Berning-Schawe

Jean Berning-Schawe, 74, died Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Trinity Manor, Dodge City. 

She was born July 10, 1942 at Scott City, the daughter of Alphonse and Catherine (Polan) Kerschen. A Dodge City resident since 1992, moving from Garden City, she was a Registered Nurse and owner of Golden Medical, Dodge City. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, Wright and Women’s Chamber and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and reading. 

On August 29, 1992 she married Ben Schawe at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Dodge City. 

Survivors include: her husband, Ben, Dodge City; 2 daughters, Nancy Smith and husband Leonard, Wichita and Stephanie Jenek and husband Jason, Wichita; 5 brothers, James Kerschen and wife Kathy, Wichita, Leroy Kerschen and wife Carolyn, Wichita, Thomas Kerschen and wife Nora, Dighton, Joseph Kerschen and wife Paula, Valley Center and Dale Kerschen and wife Barbara, Aurora, Colorado; 3 sisters, JoAnn Sigman and husband Ralph, Satanta, Lorena Forrest and husband Steve, Wichita and Mary Winter and husband Ken, Wichita; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Byron Berning, infant brother, Donnie Kerschen and a sister, Laura Kerschen. 

Vigil service will be 7:00 pm Thursday, March 23, 2017 at St. Andrew Church, Wright. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Friday at the church with Fr. Robert Schremmer presiding. Cremation will follow the Mass. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in St. Andrew Cemetery.
