James “Sonny” Marbut

James “Sonny” Marbut, 74, died January 6, 2017 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. He was born on October 5, 1942 in Cassville, Missouri the son of Elijah and Josephine (Womack) Marbut 

Sonny grew up in Cassville, Missouri where he attended Oak Grove Country School. He worked as a cowboy for various places before moving to Plains in 1982. While in Plains, he worked for XIT Ranch as a cowboy. In 1993, Sonny moved to Garden City and began working for Brookover Ranch and Feedyard until his retirement. On December 18, 2007, he married Juliana Perez in Garden City. She survives. Sonny enjoyed roping in his spare time.

In addition to his wife, Juliana, Sonny is survived by two daughters, Jamie Marbut and Tracey Abete both of Garden City; two step-sons, Armondo Canales of Garden City and Edy Edgar Perez of Lakin; one sister, Janet Mattingly of Raymore, Missouri; and two grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the James Marbut Family in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel-1901 Sixth Ave-Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
