James “Leonard” Barnes

James “Leonard” Barnes, 88, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Trinity Manor, Dodge City.

He was born June 1, 1928 at Atlanta, Kansas, the son of Esley Harold and Inez A. (Satterlee) Barnes. He joined the United States Army on October 3, 1950, served during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He worked for Northern Natural Gas for 22 years and was a Rural Mail Carrier in the Burdett, Spearville, and Wright areas for 22 years, retiring in January of 1998. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Past Governor of the Moose, Past Commander of the American Legion at Burdett, VFW, Masonic Lodge, NARFE, and Rural Mail Carriers Association. Leonard was also a Life Master Bridge Player.

On September 10, 1950, he married Donna Minchow at Oakland, Iowa.

Survivors include: his wife Donna, Dodge City; 2 sons, Tom Barnes and wife Connie, Dodge City, and David Barnes and wife Cindy, Ft. Collins, Colorado. He has 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Lawrence Barnes and wife Bernice, Claflin, a sister, Louise Cruth, Lafayette, Louisiana and sister-in-law Pam Barnes, Yukon, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Larry and Bobby Lee Barnes and a sister, Kathryn Barnes.

Memorial graveside service will be May 8, 2017, at 10:00 am at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, with Rev. Jerre Nolte and Sarah Godbey officiating, full military honors by Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714 and Military Honors for the State of Kansas followed with Masonic Rites. There will be no public visitation, cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register Friday, May 5th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1714 or American Legion Post 47 all in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
