Ina Lavell Penick, age 92, of Elkhart, Kansas died Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. She was born October 14, 1924, in Bucklin, Missouri, the daughter of Andrew and Ova Edith (Davolt) Powell.  

Mrs. Penick graduated from Brookfield High School in Brookfield, Missouri. She married William Floyd Penick in Elkhart, Kansas on July 25, 1948. During World War II, Lavell worked as a supervisor at the Ordinance Plant in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the Clerk of the District Court in Morton County and also worked at the Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. Lavell’s hobbies included sewing, quilting, embroidery, cooking, and collecting cookbooks. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkhart.

Survivors include her son, Raymond Penick and wife Shirley of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter, Marylin Porterfield and husband Bob of Garden City, Kansas; grandchildren, Lisa Penick McCune and husband Scott of Flower Mound, Texas, Shana Porterfield Tabor and husband Dustin of Garden City, Kansas, Dr. Mark Penick and wife Starrla of Andover, Kansas, Shelly Porterfield of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Clay Porterfield and wife Aimee of Garden City, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Taryn Tabor, Taylee Tabor, Noah McCune, Teegan Tabor, Jaxton Penick, Camden McCune, Crewson Penick, and Luxeigh Penick; brother, Edward Powell and wife Betty of Bucklin, Missouri; sisters, Wanda Stark of Denver, Colorado, Helen Sparkman of Elkhart, Kansas; and a host of family and friends. 

Lavell is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd in May 2004; brothers, James O. Powell of Bucklin, Missouri, and Earl Powell of Des Moines, Iowa. 

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Elkhart, Kansas with Dr. Mark Penick and Clay Porterfield officiating.
