Hugoton Takes Pair From Ulysses
Hugoton, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Both Hugoton boys and girls basketball teams finished off Tuesday night’s GWAC games with impressive wins beating Ulysses 76-38 in the girls game and 60-37 in the boys.
Girls Highlights
Ulysses (2-7, 1-3) started out strong in the girls game and pulled to 11-9 until Hugoton closed out the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 24-9 lead and never looked back in winning by 38. For the Lady Eagles they improved to 16-1 at home over the last season and a half. The win also gives Hugoton a half lead at 3-0 in conference heading into their big showdown at (3-1) Colby Friday night.
After the game Hugoton head coach Andy Gillen was pleased with the way his team attacked Ulysses’ zone.
Hugoton had four players end the night in double figures led by Melissa Fabella’s 19 off the bench. Bailey Pfingsten and Carolina Gallegos each chipped in 12 in the loss.
Boys Highlights
In the boys game, Hugoton completely dominated from the tip off. The Eagles allowed just 2 points in the first quarter and coasted to a 60-37 win. The victory pulls Hugoton (2-1 in the GWAC) to a game of first place Holcomb and in a second place tie with Scott City.
Hugoton Head Coach Craig Szymczak liked the way his team neutralize Ulysses two big scorers.
Zack Leininger poured in 21 and Wade Heger added 10. Tregg Rodriguez struggled in the first half for Ulysses, but rebounded connecting for 12 of his 14 points after halftime.
Hugoton has won the last four games in the series since Ulysses beat the Eagles on their home floor for the Blue and Red Tournament championship last season.
