Hugoton sweeps Scott City baseball
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Hugoton Eagles inched closer to claiming their second straight GWAC title on Friday, with a sweep of the Scott City Beavers 21-2 in five innings, and 3-0 in the second game.
Game one was tightly contested for the first three innings, as Hugoton led 5-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Scott City was able to pull to within 5-1 on the RBI single by Chase Rumford that scored, that scored Hunter Braun. The Eagles closed the door on the game in the fourth inning, sending 15 batters to the plate, and scoring 10 runs. Hugoton added six more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Reid Davis. Reid finished with six RBI in game one and was a triple shy of the cycle. In the previous inning, the Beavers tacked on a run to pull to within 15-2. The Eagles also saw Nick Frederick drive in four runs in the game. Frederick scattered 10 hits in the game to get the victory, and recorded six strikeouts. Keigun Wells went 3 2/3 innings, allowing 15 runs, 5 earned, on seven hits. Todd Morris made his varsity debut, and surrendered six runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Sloan Baker and Braun each had three hits in the game.
Game two may have been the best defensive game of the season for the Beavers. In the tightly-contested game, Hugoton broke the scoreless game in the top of the third, as Shade Shuck drove in Yates Sutton with an RBI Double. The Eagles added two more in the fourth inning to make it a 3-0 game. Scott City was unable o get a timely RBI hit, as they left runners in scoring position in four of the seven innings. Hunter Brown ended up with two of the teams eight hits, all singles. Sloan Baker took the loss for the Beavers, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits, and recorded six strikeouts. Hugoton’s Dakota Moodie picked up the shutout win, and struck out eight. Hugoton got two hits apiece from Shade Shuck, Ross Davis and Jeison Rodriguez. Shuck and Rodriguez each had an RBI.
After Friday, Hugoton remains undefeated at 15-0 overall, 8-0 in GWAC play, and will face Ulysses on Tuesday. Scott City dropped to 0-16 overall, and 0-8 in league play, and will wrap up their regular season on Thursday at home against Goodland. Official pairings will be released for the Scott City Regional on Wednesday. As of today, Hugoton will face Scott City, and Goodland will take on Colby. The Hugoton Eagles would be the top seed, followed by Colby, Goodland and Scott City.
