Hugoton sweeps Scott City
Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their first games in three weeks, Scott City and Hugoton met up for the first of two meetings in an 18-day stretch on Friday night for Hugoton’s home opener. The Lady Eagles would lead wire to wire, taking a 57-31 win, while the Hugton boys would use hot shooting in the final eight minutes to rally for a 52-42 win.

The No. 5 team in Class 3A used solid defense early on to build a 13-5 lead through the first eight minutes, and never looked back. Scott City would commit early turnover that eventually would come back to haunt time, and the Lady Eagles would open the second quarter with a 10-0 run and led 23-5 with a little under three minutes left in the half. The Lady Beavers would only put up two points in the second frame, and trailed 27-7 at intermission. Hugoton opened the second half with four points to take a 31-7 lead, only to see Scott City put together their best run of the night. They went on a 12-3 run to pull to within 34-19 with a little over a minute remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Beavers got to within 40-23 with 5:22 left, before Hugoton warmed up from the floor, and closed the game on an 17-8 run to take the 57-31 win. Their largest lead would be at 30 points, coming late in the fourth quarter.
Mikyn Hamlin led the way with 28 points for Hugoton, and Gianna Vos added 12. The Lady Eagles were 9-16 at the free throw line and had 10 turnovers. Amber Latta paced Scott City with 11 points, as the Lady Beavers committed 25 turnovers and went just 2-3 at the free throw line. Both teams had 28 rebounds.
With the win, Hugoton has won two straight in the series and since 1989, they lead the series 23-12.

Hugoton Boys 52, Scott City 42
Scott City had things in their favor for a majority of the game, but for a second straight game, it would be their opponent who would get warm from the floor in the final eight minutes. The Beavers took a 10-9 lead after the first quarter, and trailing 15-12 in the first minute of the second quarter, Scott City would go on a 16-2 run to lead 28-17 with 54 seconds remaining in the half. Hugoton scored the next 10 points of the ballgame, and pulled to within 28-27 midway into the third quarter. The Beavers would keep the lead, going up 35-29 heading into the final quarter. However, the fourth quarter would belong to the Eagles in their home opener. Hugoton scored the first 13 points to go up 42-35 with 4:17 left. Scott City could get no closer than five, as the Eagles used a 7-0 run to lead 49-37 with 1:41 left. Hugoton led by as many as 13 in the final period, before settling for the 52-42 win, as they outscored the Beavers 23-7 in the final frame.
Jayce Korf led the Eagles with 15 points Hadan Daharsh had 12 and Ryle Riddlesberger had eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Hugoton was 7-14 at the free throw line and had seven turnovers. Carter Gooden led Scott City with a career-best 10 points, as the Beavers went 4-8 at the foul line and had 20 turnovers. They outrebounded Hugoton 34-30.
With the win, Hugoton has now won eight straight in the series, which is their longest. Scott City still leads the series since 1989 18-16.
