Hugoton Girls, Scott City Boys Take GWAC Victories

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their first games after the Christmas break, Scott City and Hugoton split a doubleheader Friday night at Scott Community High School. Both games saw no ties or lead changes, as the Lady Eagles won 58-30, while the Beaver boys prevailed 71-8.

Hugoton’s girls started the game on a hot streak, scoring the first 16 points in the first two minutes and 20 seconds of the game. During that run, they were 6-of-6 from the field, including four three’s. Scott City would rally with the final nine points of the first quarter to pull to within 16-9 after the first period. The Lady Eagles would score the first seven points of the second frame, and never led by less than 12 points for the rest of the game. Hugoton extended the score to 36-23 at the break. The Lady Beavers had one of their better offensive outputs in the first half, but struggled mightily from the field in the second half. They scored only seven points, and only one field goal. Hugoton extended their lead to 49-27 after three and went on to win 58-30. Their biggest lead was at 29 points late in the game. The Lady Eagles (5-2, 1-1 GWAC) were led by sophomore Riley Sosa with a game-high 18 points, all on three-point shots. Nicole Kinser added 10. Scott City (1-4, 1-1) was paced by Janessa Lowenthal’s 15 points, all in the first half.

The boys game was all Scott City, thanks to a good defensive start by the Beavers and  a night that Hugoton would like to forget. Scott City had runs of 11, 28, 11, and 13 in the game. It was 15-3 after one, 45-5 at the break and 65-7 at the end of the third quarter. The Eagles ended up with only two field goal makes the whole game, and five three throws. All 12 players that suited up scored for the Beavers, as they were led by Drew Kite with 21 points. Scott City (5-0, 2-0 GWAC) also had Trey O’Neil in double figures with 12 points. Hugoton (2-4) was led by AJ Scott with three points.
