Hugoton Girls Finish Perfect in GWAC; Holcomb Boys Share Title With Scott City

Holcomb, KS (westernkansasnews.com)  Two teams and two different objectives in wrapping up conference play on Tuesday night in Holcomb.  For the Hugoton girls a chance to make history by going undefeated in conference and for the Holcomb boys no worse than sharing the conference crown in the Great Western Activities Conference with Scott City.

Mission accomplished on both ends.

Girls Highlights

Hugoton’s girls jumped out to a 24-11 lead, had the lead cut to four at half, but outscored Holcomb 34-19 in beating Holcomb 68-49.   Senior Stef Armendariz scored in double figures for the second straight game with 11.  Armendariz was one of five players in double figures led by Katy Heger’s 16. 

Holcomb’s Taylor Deniston made senior night her show.  Friday night she scored 27 against Goodland.  Deniston added another 28 and had three-three pointers in Tuesday night’s loss to Holcomb.

Holcomb’s boys team ended the regular season 19-1, 9-1 in GWAC with a decisive 80-66 win over Hugoton.  Its only the second time all year Hugoton allowed 80 points in a game. 

Boys Highlights

The Longhorns matched their the number of 3’s they had in an earlier 56-49 win against Minneola with 10 three pointers in beating Hugoton 80-66.  Trey Sleep led Holcomb with 22 points and the Longhorns held a 35-21 lead on the board in capturing a share of the conference title with Scott City.  Zack Leininger led Hugoton with 14 points in the loss.

Holcomb and Hugoton could possibly meet again as both teams will be at Larned for substate.  Larned and Pratt are the only four teams that will participating in the tournament beginning a week from Thursday.  Hugoton has one last tune up when they host Lakin Friday for Senior Night.
