Hugoton Football Snaps Four Game Losing Streak
Kismet, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Playing with heavily hearts after the death of their sophomore classmate Montana Beesley. Hugoton snapped a four game losing streak and entered district play next Friday on a winning note defeating Southwestern Heights 33-9. Coach Todd Fulton know this win had a deeper meaning to it.
Highlights
Hugoton (2-4) gave up the first points of the game with 4 and half minutes left in the first quarter. Southwestern Heights (2-4) quarterback Jorge De La Torre had a 65 yard run to set up his own two yard score. The Mustangs would be held scoreless until the fourth quarter and committed eight turnovers. Its an area where Coach Fulton feels his team has improved.
The Eagles did most of their damage on the ground rushing for 320 yards, 25 short of what Russell did the previous week in winning 42-14. Hugoton’s Ulises Armendariz rushed seven times for 93 yards and Tino Degollado 19 times for 81 yards. Both Armendariz and Degollado had two rushing touchdowns each including a 41 yard run by Armendariz in the third quarter to give . Hugoton led 14-7 at half and cruised in scoring 33 unanswered points.
Defensively Hugoton played their most solid game of the year. Ulises Armendariz had three interceptions and the Eagles recovered five fumbles while getting eight tackles for a loss. Zack Leninger recovered a high snap in the end zone for a touchdown the gave Hugoton their second touchdown of the night and a seven point lead going into half.
Hugoton will begin district play with back-to-back home game against Pratt and Larned before finishing the regular season at Holcomb.
