Hugoton: Boys Win Tourney Title; Girls Take Their Lumps
Hugoton, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Hugoton’s girls and boys basketball teams played championship games in the Blue and Red Classic Saturday night with mixed results. The boys outscored GWAC rival Ulysses 22-9 in the second quarter and cruised to a 63-38 win. For Eagles Coach Craig Szymczak and his team it was nice to avenge a 61-58 loss to the Tigers in last year’s tournament finals.
Boys Highlights
Sophomore Zach Linenger capped off his tournament MVP performance with 17 points. Leninger was joined in double figures by Parker Titus who had 13, Tony Kinser and Kellen Watkins each chipped in 10. Titus and Watkins were also the all-tournament team. Freddy Rodriguez scored 13 in the loss. Hugoton remains undefeated at 4-0 heading into much anticipated game Friday night when Scott City comes to town.
Girls Highlights
The Hugoton girls were shocked and lost their tournament final to Gruver, Tx 66-34. Gruver lost 48-42 last year in the tournament semifinals to Hugoton, but the Lady Hounds who returned all five of their starters took out a measure of revenge quickly jumping out on a 17-0 run thanks to the help of three 3 pointers.
The tandem of Brennyn Seagler and Reagan Haynes were just too much to stop for the Eagles. Seagler scored 24 and Haynes followed with 23. After the game Hugoton Head Coach Andy Gillen hope his team can recover from such a lopsided loss.
Amy Scott scored 13 for Hugoton in the loss. Scott, Katy Heger and Dallie Hoskinson who scored 46 in the first two games, but was held to just two in the final were all named to the all-tournament team. Haynes took the MVP award. Gruver won their ninth in a row and Hugoton dropped their record to 3-1.
