Hugoton boys & girls cross country teams repeat as GWAC Champs
ugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It seems like every year in the Great West Activities Conference, it’s wash, rinse, and repeat for who is at the top of the GWAC cross country standings. This year, it has been as closely contested for Hugoton in a while, as Scott City looked to dethrone the Eagle boys & girls teams. Thursday at the GWAC Cross Country meet, the Hugoton Eagles repeated once again, defending their title on their own course in Hugoton. The Lady Eagles and Lady Beavers cross country teams went back and forth in their competitions all season when they met up in the first four meets this year. Scott City’s girls won the league meet two years ago. Second place in the team standings for both the boys & girls went to Scott City.
This year’s difference was who was at the top individually. On the boys side, Ulysses senior Alex Barbosa ran his better race of the season, taking top honors in the league, and Hugoton sophomore Abby Heger took the top spot on the girls side.
Saturday, October 22 is regional cross country competition. The Class 4A Teams of Colby, Goodland, Holcomb, Scott City and Ulysses will run at the 4A Regional meet at the Sand Plum Course in Victoria, while Hugoton will run in the 3A Regional meet at the Sterling Country Club in Sterling.
