Hugoton Basketball Sweeps Sublette; Gets Tenth Wins of Season
Sublette, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The Hugoton boys and girls basketball teams were both disappointed in their performances at the Sterling Invitational for different reasons. The girls after finished fifth in the eighth team field followingan opening round loss and the boys because they lost by 18 in the championship to Beloit.
The good news is both teams rebounded with road wins Tuesday night in Sublette.
Boys Highlights
For the first time this year Wade Heger led Hugoton in scoring with 14 points and the Eagles improved to 10-2 with a 61-46 road win in Sublette (7-5). Head Coach Craig Szymczak believes Heger is doing all the right things.
Hugoton used a 13-2 midway through the second quarter and 26 point third period performance to pull out the win. Parker Titus added 13 for Hugoton. Nate Cearley a season after torching Hugoton for 37 after hitting 6-of-13 three point shots was held to 20 Tuesday night.
Girls Highlights
For the Hugoton girls, four players reached double figures led by Amy Scott’s 19 and the Lady Eagles matched the boys with a 10-2 mark by thumping Sublette (5-8) 77-40. Hugoton Head Coach Andy Gillen was pleased with his team’s ability to make Sublette play faster than they wanted.
Melissa Fabella added 15 off the bench for the Lady Eagles, Katy Heger chipped in with 15. Brooke Briggs finished with 15 in the loss.
