Hot start aids Buster men over Sterling JV

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering Wednesday night’s game, there was no doubt who was going to win. Garden City entered 2-0 on the season, in hopes to continue to improve in different areas of their game. The Busters led wire-to-wire Wednesday night, and cruised to a 93-52 win over Sterling JV inside Conestoga Arena.

Garden City started out with a huge run to begin the game. They used a 19-0 run over a six-minute stretch to go up 26-8 with 10:36 left in the first half. It would end up being a 32-6 run over 11 minutes, as they led 40-8 with over five minutes left in the half. They held the Warriors scoreless over a six-minute stretch and a three-minute stretch in the opening 20 minutes. The Busters would lead by as many as 41 at 53-12 with two minutes remaining in the first half, before settling for a 57-21 halftime lead.

In the second half, Garden City (3-0) scored the opening 11 points and ended up going on a 21-3 run in the first seven minutes to lead 78-24 with 12:43 left. That would be their largest lead of the night. After the Busters led 83-30 with 9:21 left, Sterling JV would go on a 17-2 run to pull to within 85-47 with 2:42 left. Garden City scored eight of the final 13 points of the game to settle for the 41-point win at 93-52.

Garden City had five players in double figures, led by Cheikh Kebe with a game-high 19 points, followed by a Jamir Thomas with 16, 12 each from Jakobi Pearson and Daishaun Woods and 10 from Russhard Curickshank. The Busters shot 59% for the game at 36-61, and were 15-20 from the free throw line. They outrebounded Sterling JV 43-14 and scored the Warriors 58-14 in the paint.

The Warriors had one in double figures, as Nate Heneha had 11 points. Sterling JV shot 33% for the game at 18-54 and were 7-14 from the free throw line, and committed 19 turnovers.
