Hot Shooting Second Quarter Leads Scott City Past Holcomb
Kismet, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After trailing 17-15 after the first quarter Saturday night, the Scott City Beavers used a 23-10 second quarter run, and never looked back, as they downed Holcomb 81-61 Saturday night in a battle of GWAC foes and Class 3A top 10 teams.
The Longhorns started off shooting 53% in the first quarter, and closed out the final 3:29 of the opening frame on a 12-5 run to lead the Beavers 17-15 after the opening period. In the second quarter, Scott City hit their first eight shots from the field, and use runs of five and seven straight, and lead by 11 points on two occasions, including the halftime score 38-27. The second half saw the Beavers start out on a 7-2 run to lead 46-29 with 5:37 remaining in the third. Holcomb would surge back one final time cutting the lead to 47-36 about midway through the third quarter. That would be the closest the Longhorns would get the rest of the night. A 13-5 run, including a buzzer beater by Tyler Hess gave Scott City a 60-41 lead after three quarters. The Beavers would continue their surge in the final eight minutes, leading by as many as 27 points, before Holcomb were able to cut it to 20 in the final seconds. It was the third straight time that Scott City has defeated the Longhorns in the Sub-State Final, and the third straight season the Beavers won all three meetings in a season.
Five players for Scott City (22-1) finished in double figures, led by Drew Kite’s 22 points, Joey Meyer finished with 17 points. Tyler Hess had a career-best 17 points, while Brett O’Neil finished with 14 and Trey O’Neil added 10. Holcomb (18-5) was led by Tyler LaSalle’s 22 points, while Heath Tucker and Aaron Hernandez added 11 points apiece.
Scott City is the second seed in the Class 3A State Basketball Tournament, as they face Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan Thursday afternoon at 3 pm in the Hutchinson Sports Arena. St. Mary’s Colgan is the seventh seed, and won their sub-state final over Riverton 74-54 Saturday night.
