Homecoming Sweep! Scott City takes care of Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The month of February is a month where teams want to get hot heading into sub-state competition. Friday night began the second half of GWAC play for Scott City and Colby, as the two teams met in Scott City. Much like the first meeting, the Beavers came out with a pair of wins. The girls game saw Scott City pull away late with a 48-36 win, while the Beaver boys held Colby to one point in the second quarter, en route to the 52-25 victory. Also Friday night, Hayden Nevills and Nancy Wiebe were crowned Winter Homecoming King & Queen.

Both teams were down a regular starter entering Friday night’s battle, as Hallie Vaughn for Colby and Kaitlyn Roberts for Scott City were out of the lineup, due to injuries. Both should return soon. There were three lead changes in the first quarter, as the Lady Beavers jumped out to the 9-7 lead after one quarter. Scott City would open the first five minutes of the second quarter on a 9-3 run to lead 18-10. Colby (4-11, 0-6 GWAC) would bounce back, pulling to within 21-17 at the break, and got to within one point on three occasions in the third period. The Lady Beavers scored the last five points of the third frame to take a 31-26 lead going into the final quarter. Early in the fourth, the Lady Eagles hit a pair of three’s, and the closest the got was at 34-32 with 5:05 remaining. Scott City (8-8, 4-2 GWAC), used a 12-1 run over a 3:24 span to pull away, and snap a two-game skid. Both teams would trade free throws in the final minute of the game. The Lady Beavers got 14 points from Bailey Latta, and 11 points off the bench from Paige Winderlin, which was a career-high. Scott City was 11-22 at the foul line. Colby was led by Brittany Foss with eight points, and were 8-15 at the free throw line. With the win, Scott City has now won three straight over the Lady Eagles, and have won the most GWAC games in a season since the 2011-12 season, when they won four games. They’ve eclipsed their win total from last season of seven games. For the second straight season, Scott City’s girls defeated Colby 48-36 at home without Colby’s top scorer playing.

The series hasn’t been close since the formation of the GWAC. The Beavers have one every game so far in the seven seasons, and things wouldn’t change Friday night. Despite a pair of ties by Colby early on, Scott City would control the game. The Beavers raced out to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter, and used a 19-1 run over a nine-minute, 32-second stretch of the first half to take a 29-10 halftime lead. Colby (3-11, 0-6 GWAC) couldn’t buy a field goal, as they would go 14-minutes, 46 seconds without a field goal from the first to the third quarters. In the second half, Scott City (10-6, 3-3) used a 14-2 run to lead 43-14 with 1:34 left in the third quarter, and eventually led 45-18 heading into the fourth quarter. A running clock began wiht 4:50 left on a free throw, as the Beavers would lead by 30 on two occasions, before settling for the 27-point win at 52-25. Scott City got 19 points from Bo Hess, and 12 apiece from Jordan Horn and Marshal Faurot. The Beavers were 13-21 at the foul line, and had 12 turnovers. Colby was led by Jordan Schippers with 11 points. The Eagles shot 7-11 at the free throw line, but committed 21 turnovers. Scott City has now won a season-best four straight games, and have won the last 17 games in the series dating back to January of 2010. The Beavers have held Colby to 24-25 points this season, which are the lowest point totals for the Eagles this year. They have four games of sub-30 points in 14 games. Colby was without starter Brooks Curry, who did not make the trip due to sickness.
