Holcomb Lady Longhorns 60 – Colby Eagles 24

Once again the Holcomb Lady Longhorns used a fast start to overwhelm their opponent, scoring the game’s first 11 points, on their way to a 20-9 1st quarter lead and they kept pouring it on, leading 35-14 at halftime and 53-18 after three quarters. The Longhorns pressed early and scored 12 points off turnovers in the 1st half. Three Holcomb players scored in double figures—Taylor Deniston 20, Kylee Amos 13 and Jordan Jarnigan 11. Season-leading scorer Haley Heydman finished with only 8 points, but her scoring wasn’t needed on this night. For the game the Longhorns shot 37% from 3-point range, 40% from the field, but just 6 out of 16 from the free throw line. Holcomb improves to 7-0 and will travel to Scott City for another league showdown Tuesday night. The Beavers fell to unbeaten Hugoton 64-37 on Friday to drop to 1-4 on the season. Holcomb swept the series last year. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30, with the pregame show starting at 6:15 on KBUF.

 

Holcomb Longhorns 62 – Colby Eagles 25

After a back-and-forth game through the first 5:30, the Longhorns rattled off 8 straight points in 2:30 to open up a 17 – 8 first quarter lead and they never looked back, leading 38 – 12 at halftime and 52 – 19 after three quarters, rolling to the 62 – 25 victory over the winless Colby Eagles. Trey Sleep led the way with 16 points and Heath Tucker finishaed with 15. Coach Chad Novack cleared his bench early in the 4th quarter and nine Longhorns scored in this game. The win sets up a showdown for first place in the GWAC Tuesday night against Scott City.  The Beavers rolled over Hugoton 72 – 45 and stand 4 – 1 on the season, 2 – 0 in conference. The Longhorns are 6 – 1 overall and 2 – 0 in league play. Last year Holcomb lost all three games against Scott City, including the sub-state finals. Tip-off Tuesday night will follow the girls’ game on KBUF.
