Holcomb sweeps own triangular
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night was Holcomb’s Senior Night, as well as their Dig Pink Night for Breast Cancer Awareness. As hosts, the Lady Longhorns swept their opponents Southwestern Heights and Scott City in straight sets. The Lady Mustangs took down the Lady Beavers in two sets.
For Scott City, it’s been an up and down season. Against Southwestern Heights in their first match of the evening, it was a slow start. After trailing 7-1 to begin the match, the Lady Beavers used a 7-3 run to pull to within a 12-10 deficit. The Lady Mustangs scored six of eight points, and eventually grew their lead to 23-14, before taking the first set 25-17. Set two saw Scott City come out strong, building a 6-1 lead, only to see Southwestern Heights come back to tie the game at nine. After trailing 10-9, the Lady Beavers scored five of the next six points to take a 14-11 lead. The Lady Mustangs would rally and tie the game at 18, and then score six straight. They took the second set and match with a 25-20 win.
The finale of the night featured a rematch of last years sub-state semi-final in Hoisington featuring Scott City and Holcomb. Scott city and Holcomb went back and forth in a tightly contested match early on. They were tied at two, three and six. That’s when the Lady Longhorns went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Lady Beavers pulled to within 13-11, but Holcomb took off and used a 9-1 run to finish off the first set 25-16. Scott City trailed the entire way in the second set, starting off down 6-1, then 14-3. It would come as close as nine points at 15-6 in the set, before the Lady Longhorns closed the match on a 10-1 run to win 25-7.
In the first match of the night, Holcomb had no problem with Southwestern Heights, sweeping them 25-17, 25-9.
Up next for Holcomb is the Scott City Invitational Saturday morning at 9. They’ll be in the pool with Wheatland/Grinnell, Leoti and Norton. Scott City has one more day of competition before their invitational Saturday, as they will face Dodge City, Garden City and Ulysses in a quadrangular in Garden City on Thursday. Southwestern Heights will play in a quadrangular at Stanton County next Tuesday.
