Holcomb, Scott City softball advance to regional final

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering Thursday regional in Scott City, there would be no doubt that the games would feature quality play across two diamonds at the Scott Rec Complex. While the top two seeds would advance to Friday’s regional championship game, the Lady Longhorns and Lady Beavers would have to use large rallies late. Holcomb battled from a 12-5 deficit to win 16-15 in 10 innings over Colby, while Scott City rallied for an 8-7 win over Cimarron.

In the quarterfinal games. Scott City would win in six innings over Southwestern Heights 16-6 to advance to the semi finals to meet up with Cimarron. The Lady Bluejays took out Haskell County 20-6 in their first game of the day. Holcomb held off a late Goodland rally in a 12-9 win, while Colby trailed early 5-1, and came back to defeat Lakin 13-6.

The top seeded Lady Beavers trailed early against Cimarron, but tied it up at two, only to see the Lady Bluejays scored the next six runs in the game to go up 8-2. Scott City would need seven runs in their last at bat to advance to the finals. And they would deliver. They got the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with one out to stun Cimarron 9-8.  The Lady Bluejays finished their season at 14-7. For Holcomb, they would trail early, and see their deficit grow to 12-5. Slowly, they were able to rally, and tied the game in the seventh at 12. Colby took a 15-12 lead in the top of the ninth, only to see the Lady Longhorns respond with a three-run home run to tie the game at 15. They would walk off with the win in the 10th inning to win a 16-15 thriller. Colby finished their year at 12-10.

Scott City enters the regional final Friday at 5:30 with their best record in program history at 20-2. They had never won more than 18 games in a season. Holcomb comes in at 19-3. This is Scott City’s first regional final since 2017, and Holcomb’s first regional championship game in recent history.
