Holcomb, Scott City set to battle at Broncbuster Stadium

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in the fairly new rivalry, Holcomb and Scott City will meet at a neutral location. Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City is the site for the 24th meeting between the Longhorns and Beavers in a game that will have an impact in the Class 3A, District 8 standings.

Holcomb enters tonight’s game at 5-0 overall, 2-0 in district play, after a 39-12 road win at Colby last Friday night. The Longhorns jumped out to a 19-0 lead after the first quarter, and led 33-6 at the break. They would rush for 264 yards in the game, and finished with 285 yards of offense. Through the first five games, Holcomb has outscored opponents on average 36-11, and have averaged 373 yards of offense, with 277 coming on the ground. Damon Mesa has rushed for 749 yard and 11 touchdowns, and has passed for five touchdowns, while throwing for 238 yards this season. Chris Palacios leads the defense with 36 tackles. 

Scott City had to rally to get to 4-1 on the year, coming back from a 14-0 first quarter deficit to win 27-21 in an overtime thriller over Hugoton at Darner Field last Friday night. The Eagles scored in the final 70 seconds of regulation to force overtime. The Beavers were outgained in the win 286-223, but forced four turnovers despite having two of their own. In five games, Scott City has outscored opponents 29-13 on average, while having a 229-90 advantage in yards. Brady Welker has over 400 yards rushing and eight scores, while Dylan Metzger has three passing touchdowns. The Beavers have had two shutouts this season, and will be facing an opponent with a 2-0 record or better for the fourth time in the last five games, with all but one taking place away from Scott City.

Scott City leads the series 18-5, but the series has been played tightly over the past 10 games. The Beavers are 6-4 over those games, but both teams have scored 184 points during that span.
