Holcomb, Scott City collide on the grid iron tonight
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The last two games between Scott City and Holcomb have been close, closer than the previous five meetings. Two years ago at Darner field, the Beavers distanced themselves in the fourth quarter to win 21-7, and defeated the Longhorns on a last second field goal to escape Holcomb with a 31-28 win. Tonight, first place in the GWAC is on the line with two league games remaining for each. Also, both teams carry 3-0 records overall, and are 2-0 in the Great West Activities Conference.
Holcomb won a 17-14 overtime thriller against the Ulysses Tigers. Trey Teeter kicked in a 31-yard field goal in overtime to give the Longhorns their second win in three years over Ulysses. Holcomb was able to shut down the Tigers on their lone possession in overtime, with a goal line stand at the one yard line. Despite having under 200 yards of offense for the game and only 38 yards on the ground, Holcomb scored both of their touchdowns on the ground in the second quarter. This year’s Longhorn squad returns most of their team that fell in the Regional Round of the Class 3A Playoffs to Beloit, and also replace a starting quarterback with a now three-year starting quarterback from Goodland in Trey Teeter. Teeter’s father, Kent, is also the head coach for the Longhorns. Holcomb is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2008.
Scott City, who has started off 3-0 for seven straight seasons, scored on their first 10 possessions at Goodland last Friday night in a 65-12 rout of the Cowboys. The Beavers rushed for 514 yards, and accumulated 709 yards of offense. Cooper Griffith rushed for 183 yards, and Wyatt Kropp added 153 to help pace the Scott City rushing attack. Scott City led 16-0 after the first quarter, and led 34-6 at intermission, en route to their 11th straight win over the Cowboys. Scott City’s defense did surrender 309 yards through the air, but only allowed one defensive touchdown, and picked off two passes. The 65 points scored were the most the Beavers have put on the scoreboard since 1994, when they scored 61 against Hugoton in week nine. Also, the 514 yards rushing were the most in coach Glenn O’Neil’s eight years.
It’s homecoming tonight at Darner Field, as Holcomb hits the road for the first time in three weeks, while Scott City is at home for the first time in three weeks.
