Holcomb girls win; boys fall at Hillsboro

The Longhorns split tonight in round two of the Trojan classic in Hillsboro. The lady Longhorns win big over Remington 50-31, and the Holcomb boys fall to Hesston 54-37.

The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 9-2 lead with 4:30 to go in the first quarter. Remington would get back within 5 14-9 with 2:00 minutes left in the first quarter and Holcomb would go into the second quarter up 16-9 behind 12 combined points for Blair Holiday and Maddison Ruda. Strong defense in the second quarter would let the Longhorns stretch it out to a 27-9 lead with 3:00 minutes to go. Holcomb would take a 31-16 lead into halftime behind 6 second quarter points for Teryn Teeter.The Longhorns shot 44% in the first half and had just 5 turnover while forcing 13 turnovers for Remington. Holcomb would not come out as strong shooting in the second half but the defense kept up the intensity and at the end of the third quarter Holcomb would be up 39-24. Holcomb would cruise down the stretch and win 50-31 over Remington. Holcomb shot 36% from the field and had 43 rebounds and 24 turnovers. Remington shot 25% and had 32 rebounds and 30 turnovers. Remington was led by Morgan Thunberg with 9 points and Bethany Regehr with 8 points. Holcomb was led by Maddison Ruda with 14 points, Teryn Teeter with 10 points, and Blair Holiday with 9 points and 5 rebounds. Holcomb moves to 2-8 on the season.

The Holcomb boys started slow and had just one field goal in the first quarter and were down 12-2 after the first quarter. Hesston would stretch it out to a 16 point lead going into halftime 27-11. Hesston would stretch it out to a 21 point lead with 3:45 to go in the third 37-16. Holcomb would get it back within 17 on a 6-2 run going into the fourth quarter down 22-39. Hesston would keep Holcomb at arms length down the stretch and win 54-37. Holcomb shot 25% and had 18 rebounds and 12 turnovers. Hesston shot 48% and had 14 rebounds 8 turnovers. Hesston was led by Camden Mcdonald with 15 points and Cason Richardson with 13 points. Holcomb was led by Zion Mason with 9 points and then Jackson Stoppel, Damon Kepley, River Amos, and Kobe Hands all had 6 points. Holcomb falls to 5-5 on the season and have lost 3 out of their last 4.

Next up round three of the Trojan classic on Friday, boys play in the third place game at 2:30 and the girls play in the fifth place game at 4:00.
