Holcomb girls rout KC Christian

The Holcomb Lady Longhorns opened the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic on Thursday, rolling over Kansas City Christian 47-13 for their first win.

The Longhorns started quickly, scoring off the opening tip less than 10 seconds into the game, and led 8-0 two minutes into the game. KC Christian would score at the 4:00 minute mark and again with 1:00 to play in the first quarter, as Holcomb raced to a 20-4 lead. The Panthers scored to open the second quarter, but never scored again in the first half, as the Longhorns forced 17 turnovers and pushed the lead to 33-6 at the break on 52% shooting.

Coach Nathan Novack rotated 10 girls in and out of the lineup in the second half as Holcomb coasted to the 34-point victory. Jordan Jarnigan led the way with 11 points, followed by Courtney Wren with 10 and Taylor Sleep with 7. Sleep finished 5 out of 6 from the free throw line and Jarnigan was 3 for 3 from the stripe.

Holcomb shot 40% from the field for the game, but just 21% from beyond the arc, hitting 3 out of 14 attempts. The Longhorns’ ball hawking defense limited the Panthers to just 18 shot attempts for the game, forcing 29 turnovers.

The Lady Longhorns are now 1-1 on the season and will face Pueblo East Friday night with a 6:30 tip-off, 6:15 pregame on AM 1030 KBUF.
