Holcomb boys, Scott City girls claim GWAC Cross Country titles
Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a windy Thursday afternoon, the seven GWAC schools made their way to Colby’s Meadow Lake Golf Course for the Great West Activities Conference cross country meet.
In the end, the Holcomb boys and Scott City girls would take the GWAC titles, and take momentum in to the Class 3A Regional meet next weekend.
For the boys, Holcomb claimed their second consecutive league title, finishing with 20 points, while Scott City was second with 49 points and Cimarron took third. The 1-2 punch of Brody Deniston and Landen Leonard would be at the top for the Longhorns, as they had four of the top five finishers. Scott City’s Michael Hermosillo was a third place finisher. Cimarron’s Ian Harmon took sixth to pace the Bluejays.
The girls race saw Scott City win their first league title since 2020, as five of their runners placed in the top 10. The Lady Beavers had 24 points, while Holcomb was second with 42 points and Goodland was third. Cimarron would take the top two spots, as Janae Fugitt and Jyntri Wilson would finish first and second. Scott City’s Belle Trout and Brailey Cook would place third and fourth, while Jenera Ardery from Holcomb was fifth.
