Holcomb boys fall in tournament title game
The Holcomb Longhorns had to settle for second place at the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro Saturday night, falling to the top-ranked team in 3A, the unbeaten Hesston Swathers, 57-51. The Swathers jumped out to an 8-point first quarter lead, but the Longhorns trimmed it to 3 at halftime, trailing just 26-23. Hesston pushed the lead up to 9 in the third quarter, but Holcomb battled back again, tying it once at 38, before finding itself down three again headed into the final stanza. The Longhorns took the lead once, 48-47, but costly turnovers late in the game enabled the Swathers to pull it out. Heath Tucker was the only Longhorn in double figures Saturday night, with 21 points. Holcomb is now 9-3 on the season after winning two of three at the tournament, crushing Hays-TMP in the opener, 60-43; and then overcoming Hillsboro, 66-60 on Friday. The Longhorns return to action this Friday at Hugoton. You can hear that game on KBUF 1030-AM immediately following the girls game.
