Holcomb boys fall to Hugoton; girls earn first win

The Holcomb Longhorns split tonight Hugoton. The Longhorn girls win 47-42, while the Longhorn boys lose 72-61.

The Longhorn girls beat Hugoton 47-42. The Longhorns started slow on offense tonight but good defense kept them in the game and back to back buckets by Lauren Jones would give them a 6-3 lead with 2:45 left in the first. Then a big 3 pointer by Teryn Teeter would help the Longhorns to 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Longhorns would play well in the second and have a 24-19 lead at halftime. But Holcomb would come out slow in the third and Hugoton would take a 31-30 lead with 2:15 left in the third. Then a big steal and layup at the buzzer for Blair Holiday tied it back up 33-33 to end the third. Hugoton would come out in the fourth and stretch the lead to 42-37 with 4:15 to go in the fourth. But Holcomb would not quit and great defense gave them a chance to get right back in the game. Blair Holiday hit a big three pointer to give the Longhorns a 43-42 lead with 2:15 left in the fourth. Holcomb would close out the game and win 47-42 Hugoton did not have a single point in the final 4 minutes Holcomb shot just 16/60 and 11/24 at the foul line while Hugoton shot 16/48 and went 9/16 at the foul line. Hugoton was led by Rebecca Johnson with 12 points and Jordyn Beard with 10 points and 17 rebounds for a double double. Holcomb was led by Blair Holiday off the bench with 10 points and 6 rebounds and Lauren Jones with 10 points and 5 rebounds, Teryn Teeter and Maddison Ruda added 9 points each. The Lady Longhorns move to 1-7 on the season

The Longhorn boys lose 72-61. Holcomb would come out strong and have a 20-15 lead after the first quarter behind 6 points from Zion Mason. Hugoton would not go away though dominate the second quarter and be up at halftime 37-32 behind 10 second quarter points from Carlos Montiel. This would be the first game Holcomb never had a lead in the second half, the closest they got was within 3 right after half. Hugoton would have a 57-49 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Eagles would cruise to a 72-61 victory. Holcomb shot 19/55 from the field and shot 21/25 from the foul line while Hugoton shot 19/42 and went 18/35 at the foul line. Holcomb had 19 turnovers while forcing only 10 turnovers. Hugoton was led by Carlos Montiel with 26 points and 8 rebounds. The Longhorns were led by Jackson Stoppel with 14 points and 8 rebounds and Zephyn Mason with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Holcomb falls to 4-4 on the season.
