Holcomb boys, Colby girls win GWAC track titles

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their final meet before regionals next week, the six Great West Activities Conference Schools made their way to Goodland for the GWAC meet. Thursday’s meet did not disappoint, with many impressive performances, and competitive events. In the end, it was the Holcomb boys winning their first GWAC meet, holding off defending champion Scott City by 11 points, while the Colby girls returned to the top of the league for the seventh time in eight league meets, edging Scott City by five points.

Despite the second place finishes, Scott City had two competitors win individual events and help win relay races. Sophomore Madison Shaplan repeated as a champion in the 100M Dash and won the pole vault, and was also on the winning 4x400M Relay team, while senior Emily Smith swept both hurdle races, and rallied the 4x400M Relay team to a league title. Emily Weathers also won gold in the 400M Dash, and was on the winning 4×400 and 4x800M Relay teams.

Sixteen of the 18 events on the girls side were won by Colby or Scott City, with Colby winning seven and Scott City nine.

On the boys side, it looked as if it were going to be a wide open race for the league title, and it turned out to be. Holcomb took over the lead in the final five events, and held on for the title, knocking off defending champion Scott City. The Beavers were without four-event star Marshall Faurot once again, who is nursing an injury. Faurot’s teammate, Jack Thomas, who has missed most of the season, was back in the lineup for a second straight meet, and ran a leg in the 4x800M Relay. Carter Blackburn, who himself is on the mend from an early season injury, swept the hurdle races to lead the Longhorns, and Devin Mader pulled a surprise to many by winning the 100M Dash over Colby’s Jordan Schippers, and was on the winning 4x100M Relay team.

Scott City finished second, but had a big day from Wyatt Hayes, who won the 800M Run and was on the winning 4x800M Relay team. Hugoton, who came in third, was led by Mitchell Hamlin, who won the 400M Run, Long jump, and was the anchor leg of the winning 4x400M Relay team, and Abraham Garcia won the 1600 and 32ooM runs.

There will be some new faces as head track coaches in the GWAC next season, as longtime Holcomb head coach Lindall Cox is retiring and longtime Hugoton head coach Nick Rodriguez will be moving to Ellsworth after the track season.

Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses will be at the 4A Regional in Andale on Thursday, while Colby, Goodland and Scott City will head to the 3A Regional in Beloit next Friday.
