Holcomb boys and girls notch wins in tourney opener
The Holcomb Longhorns both win today in round one of Trojan classic. The Holcomb girls win 53-50 in overtime over Riley County and they move to 5-5 on the season. And the Holcomb boys win 64-19 over Republic county which makes them 9-1 on the season.
The Lady Longhorns Jumped out quickly 9-1 at the 4:15 mark in the first quarter and led 17-8 after one. In the second quarter Riley county got within 2 points 20-18 with 2 minutes in the half and the Longhorns went to halftime up 23-19. The Longhorns stretched it back to a 7 point lead in the third 31-24 at the 4 minute mark. They led by 7 going into the fourth 35-28. But Riley county would not go away and tied the game 39-39 at the 3:30 mark in the fourth. Then a three pointer by Eboni Sapien and a technical against Riley in the span of 45 seconds gave the Longhorns the chance to make it a 6 point lead 45-39. Holcomb had a three point lead with 30 seconds to play 47-44. but Riley County was able to outscore the Longhorns 4-1 to tie the game at 48-48 sending it to overtime. Holcomb slowed the game way down in overtime and took a 2 point lead halfway through 50-48. But Riley County would not give up and they tied it up on a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go in overtime. The Longhorns ran a double screen for Courtney Wren who came wipe open in the corner for three pointer and she hit it with no time left to give the Longhorns the victory 53-50. Riley County was led by Emily Earhart with 16 points and 4 rebounds. Holcomb hit 6 threes in this one and were led by Eboni Sapien with 16 points and 9 rebounds and Courtney Wren with 16 points and 7 rebounds and she hit 3 threes including the game winner. The Longhorns win over Riley County in overtime 53-50 and move to 5-5 on the season.
The Holcomb boys beat Republic County 64-19. The Longhorns jumped out quick with a 22-7 lead after one quarter and 40-12 at halftime. The Longhorns came out strong in the third quarter and led 57-17 heading into the fourth. With a running clock the entire fourth quarter the Longhorns finished strong winning 64-19. The Longhorns out rebounded Republic County 35-11 and 16-1 on the offensive glass. Republic County was led by Noah Springer with 9 points and 3 rebounds. The Longhorns had 3 players in double figures Trey Gilbert had 13 points and 4 rebounds, Devin Mader had 11 points, and Kobe Dickson had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds – 7 of which were offensive boards. The Longhorns win 67-41 and move to 9-1 on the Season.
Next up for the Longhorns is another road game in the round two of the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro on Friday 01-19-18. The Lady Longhorns play the winner of Hesston versus Republic County at 3 pm Pregame at 2:45, and the boys play the winner of Hesston versus Riley County following the girls game tomorrow.
