Hays trips up Buffs
Boys Highlights:
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Some people say rankings don’t mean much. There is some truth to that, but Hays played like the third-ranked team in 5A on Friday night.
Lane Clark scored 13 points and Jordan Windholz drained four timely threes as the Indians squashed any Garden City comeback attempts 47-33 at the New Garden.
“I think we turned a corner,” Buffs Coach Jacy Hollway said afterwards. “But we’re still not doing the things that we’re capable of doing.”
Things weren’t all bad. Garden City (6-4, 2-2) jumped out to a 12-8 first-quarter lead, thanks to two threes from Mitchell Hernandez. The sharp shooter hit three 3-pointers in the first half but was held without a field goal attempt after halftime.
“I think our team didn’t do a good enough job of finding Mitchell,” Holloway said.
While the Buffs offense was trying to find it’s rhythm in the second quarter, Hays (9-0, 3-0) was just heading up. Windholz hit two of his four 3-pointers in a second quarter that saw the Indians outscore Garden City 14-2 to take a 22-14 lead into the locker room.
And even after pulling back in the game with a 12-8 spurt in the 3rd quarter, Hays pulled away in the fourth quarter. Reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Brady Werth scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Indians. Hernandez and Tristan Nanniga paced Garden City with nine points apiece.

Girls Highlights:
Through their inconsistencies, the one thing that has stayed constant has been slow starts. And it happened again on Friday.
But despite that, the Buffs rolled to a 67-29 win over winless Hays Friday night at the New Garden-thanks to another stellar 18-point, 11 rebound performance from Jaymie Bernbeck.
After leading by just six after one, Garden City (7-3) turned up the defense, outscoring the Lady Indians 25-10 to build a 39-18 half time lead.
Then Taryn Tempel took over in the third. The senior scored nine points including two threes giving the Buffs a 57-21 advantage.
Matti Schlaefli led Hays with eight points.
