Hays sweeps Red Demon basketball teams
Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Both Hays teams came in to Dodge City Friday night and swept the Red Demons. The Dodge City girls fell 50-47 in overtime and Hays handled the boys 83-63.
Girls
Kisa Unruh banked in a three from 23 feet out with 4 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. Hays would outscore Dodge City 7-4 in the extra period to win the game.
The Lady Indians(10-5, 4-0) scored 22 points off 24 Dodge City turnovers. The Lady Red Demons out rebounded Hays 42-29 including 14 offensive rebounds, but only scored 8 second chance points. Hays was 20-54 from the field for 37 percent, including 5-20 from three. Dodge City(8-6, 2-2) was 18-49 from the field for 36.7 percent and 7-24 from three.
Brooke Denning led the way for Hays with 17 point on 6-8 shooting off the bench. Tashiah Nunnery also had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Chidera led the way for Dodge City with a double-double, 15 points and 13 rebounds. Kisa Unruh chipped in as well with 12 points and 5 rebounds.
Boys
Hays jumped out to a 30-12 lead in the first quarter and never looked back against Dodge City. The Indians led 48-24 at halftime and by as much as 27 in the third quarter.
Tempers flared late as Dodge City(7-7, 2-2) Coach Tony Starnes was given a technical and technical s were called Noah Sowers and Tragdon McCrae following a scrum.
Hays(10-5, 4-0) shot 30-64 from the field for 47 percent, 12-32 from three and 11-12 at the free throw line. The Red Demons struggled shooting 22-74 for 30 percent, 9-33 from three and 10-25 from the free throw line.
Cole Murphy led the way for Hays with 27 points, including 7-14 from three. Ethan Nunnery had 22 points 10 rebounds and 4 assists and Tragdon McCrae had 17 points and 6 assists.
Hunter Heath had another double-double for Dodge City with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but was just 6-18 from the field. Kaden Riekenberg had 12 points and Noah Sowers had 8 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
