Wichita, Ks (wesetrnkansasnews.com)-Leaning on your leader is not a bad thing, especially when his name is Eric Barragan.

Last year’s leading scorer netted three goals, leading Garden City High School to a 6-3 win over Maize in the opening round of the Wichita South Titan Classic on Monday.

“We played really well,” Buffaloes’ Head Coach Joaquin Padilla said. “We controlled the ball in the first half and were able to move the ball, which was indicative of the half time score.”

Barragan got the Buffs going early-scorching the net at the eight-minute mark of the first half.

After Maize evened things up 12 minutes in, David Amaro notched his second assist, finding Barragan for his second goal and a 2-1 lead.

Gilberto Tovar’s unassisted goal in the 36th minute and Amaro’s penalty kick just two minutes later gave Garden City a 4-1 half-time lead.

The Eagles trimmed the deficit with two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half, but Esteban Neave scored to counter the attack.

Barragan’s third and final goal came in the 77th minute, capping off the scoring for the Buffs.

Garden City out shot Maize 12-8.
