Harold L. Shute, 90, died Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall, Ft. Dodge. 

He was born May 28, 1924 at Hanston, Kansas, the son of Cleadus A. and Minnie May (Rose) Shute. A lifetime area resident, he was a machinist at Speed King and Roto-Mix, both in Dodge City, retiring in May of 2013. He enjoyed coin collecting and traveling. 

He served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Charles Ausburne during WWII attaining the rank of Water Tender Third Class and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action against Japanese forces. 

On February 17, 1946 he married Ada Loughrige at Dodge City. She preceded him in death on November 20, 1993. 

Survivors include: his sister, Wynona Allen and husband Jim, Dodge City; numerous nephews and nieces, including, Ted Allen, Austin, Texas, Toby Allen and wife Jan, Cimarron, Sam Allen and wife Gabby, Brownsville, Texas, Monty “Murph” Allen and wife Renee, Dodge City and Jody Allen, Iola, Kansas; and numerous great nephews and nieces. 

He was also preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Cleadus, Jr., Paul and Gaylord Shute and a sister, Darlene Smith. 

Funeral service will be 10:30 am Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, with Pastor Jason Goetz officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City, with full military rites by Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714 and Military Honors for the State of Kansas.
