Greeley Co Boys & Girls Sweep Class 1A State Cross Country Titles, Three Area Teams Second

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the third time in the last four years, the Greeley County Jackrabbit Cross Country teams sweep the Class 1A State Cross Country Championships in Wamego Saturday. The Jackrabbit Boys team has also won three of the last four, while the Lady Rabbit team has now taken four of the last five team championships. Three other area teams took home second place trophies. Stanton County’s Boys in Class 2A, Scott City Boys in Class 3A and Garden City’s Girls in Class 6A also had great Saturdays in their respective classes.

Greeley County’s girls defeated Axtell by 22 points. Coriama Yanez placed fifth, Kelli Holthaus sixth and Kashli Holthaus was 18th among the placers for the Lady Rabbits. They also had Brooke Wineinger 37th and Yanitza Yanes 61st. Minneola finished seventh as a team. Jayda Minor led the Lady Wildcats with a 12th place finish. Freshman Payton Shapland from Dighton was the other area medalist with a 17th place finish.

In the Class 1A Boys race, Greeley County dethroned Pike Valley by 10 points. Troy Wineinger led the Jackrabbit team with a third place finish, Miguel Trejo eighth and Sergio Trejo placed 14th among the individual medal winners. Martin Veleta, was 22nd Isaac Stone 36th, Casey Randolph was 55th and A.J. Govert placed 57th. Fowler’s Efrain Estrada took home a state medal by placing 15th.

The Class 2A Girls race saw Ness City and Stanton County finish fifth and sixth as a team. Despite both teams having an identical score, Ness City’s average was a little over two seconds better than Stanton County. Jessie Rubottom led the Lady Eagles with a fourth place finish, and was their lone state placer. Jenna Black led the Lady Trojans with a 21st place finish, but was one spot out of a state medal. Wichita County’s Paige Wells was the other area medalist, placing 10th in her final state cross country meet.

Stanton County’s boys took home the runner-up trophy in the Class 2A Boys race, while Ness City placed fourth, just five points out of a third place finish. The Eagles had a state champion in junior Dray Carson, and Wyatt Beckman placed fifth. For the Trojans, they were led by Raul Pantoja’s 11th place finish and Jacob Cron was 19th to medal. Elkhart’s Israel Barco was fourth and Hodgeman County’s Christian Schuler placed 18th among the medalists.

At Rim Rock Farm just outside of Lawrence, Cimarron’s girls team placed 1oth in Class 3A, and had one medalist. Isabelle Koopman took home a medal with an 11th place finish as a freshman.

Scott City’s boys rebounded from a rough day last Saturday at regionals and took home the second place trophy in the Class 3A Boys meet, while Holcomb just missed out on a trophy by taking fourth. Joey Meyer led the Beaver runners with a fifth place finish. Leading the Longhorns was Taylor Chelemedos, who had 21st place finish, just missing a medal by a place. Senior Peter Wiebe from Southwestern Heights was the other area medalist, with a 12th place finish.

In Class 4A in Wamego, the Ulysses Lady Tigers finished 10th in the girls meet. Chisholm Branscum led the Lady Tigers, and was the lone area medalist with a sixth place finish.

It was a tough day for the Hugoton boys in the Class 4A Boys race. The Eagles tied De Soto in points with 92, but lost in the average time by 72 one-hundredths of a second. Patrick Weaver was the top area runner with a fourth place finish, followed by teammate Jacob Martin in 10th. Ulysses was eighth in the team race, and was led by Adonis Jaquez with a 36th place finish.

Garden City’s Alex Miller placed second overall in Class 6A, and helped lead the Lady Buffaloes to a second place finish as a team, their highest finish in school history. Kayla Doll was 21st, and just missed an individual medal as a team.

Dodge City was fourth overall in the Class 6A Boys team race at Rim Rock Farm. Oscar and Luis Carmona led the Red Demons with eighth and 16th place finishes individually to take home a medal.
