Goodland spoils Lady Beavers’ season opener with doubleheader sweep

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was not only a debut for the 2015 Scott City softball team, but it was also a head coaching debut for Erin Myers. Unfortunately for the Lady Beavers, it would be a tough doubleheader, as they dropped a pair of games to Goodland 13-0 in five innings, and 14-7 in the finale. 

Game one was a dominant performance in the circle for Goodland’s Stephanie DeLaRosa. She improved to 3-0 on the season, after allowing only one hit, which came in the fifth inning, and retired the first eight batters faced in the game. The Cowgirls led 2-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after three innings. Goodland scored three times in the fourth, and put the game away with seven in the fifth to force the run rule to be used. Hannah Ferguson drove in five runs, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Bre Smull took the loss, giving up nine hits and struck out three to drop to 0-1 for the Lady Beavers.

The final game of the day was a much more competitive affair between the Cowgirls and Lady Beavers. Early on, Goodland picked up where they left of earlier in the day with five runs in the first inning, only to see Scott City respond with three in the bottom of the first to pull to within 5-3. Goodland tacked on two more runs in the second inning to make it 7-3. After a scoreless third and fourth innings, the Cowgirls added a run to make it 8-3. Scott City would respond with two of their own to stay within striking distance at 8-5. The Cowgirls put the game away for good, with six runs in the sixth inning, all coming with two outs to take a 14-5 lead. A run in each of the sixth and seventh innings by the Lady Beavers made the final 14-7. Kaitlyn Daise picked up the win, scattering nine hits and had three strikeouts in seven innings. Kaitlyn Roberts made her varsity debut, and didn’t pitch too bad. She walked four batters, and allowed 13 hits. Bre Smull had three hits for Scott City. Amanda Kough, Kaitlyn Robers and Jamie Emahizer drove in runs for the Lady Beavers. Kayleigh McCombs drove in three for Goodland.

Scott City dropped to 0-2 on the season, and 0-2 in GWAC play, while Goodland is now 4-0 overall, and 2-0 in league play. The Lady Beavers travel to Liberal next Friday, April 10.
