Goodland baseball rallies to top Scott City
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their season opener on Thursday in Goodland, the Scott City baseball team took the field in Goodland against the Cowboys. Due to the weather, only one game was played. The Beavers led most of the way, but a five-run fifth hurt them in a 10-9 loss. Game two was called off due to weather conditions.
After the Cowboys scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead, Scott City used a four-run second to lead. The Beavers added a run in the third and four more in the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. Goodland had a run in the second and two in the third innings. Things fell apart for Scott City in the fifth, as the Cowboys scored five runs to take a 10-9 lead, a lead they would not surrender for the rest of the game.
Zach Carson went 2-4 with three RBI to lead the Beavers, who finished with nine hits. Kevin Herman took the loss, going five innings, giving up 10 runs, six earned, on eight hits, and struck out six. Goodland’s Gabe Biermann surrendered nine runs, two earned, in 3 2/3 innings, and Marcus Cardona went 3 1/3 innings to get the win in relief. Ralf Macias had three hits, while Brant Mull and Wence Hendrich each drove in two runs. Goodland also had nine hits. Scott City had three errors, while the Cowboys had two.
Scott City is 0-1 on the year, and 0-1 in GWAC play. They will travel to Lakin on Tuesday for a triangular, facing Southwestern Heights at 4 and Lakin at 6. Goodland improved to 4-1 on the year, and 1-0 in GWAC play. The Cowboys host Hugoton in a league doubleheader on Thursday.
