Gloria (Shultz Cummings) Strother
Gloria (Shultz Cummings) Strother, 92, died April 9, 2015 at , Homestead of Leavenworth Assisted Living in Leavenworth. She was born on August 26, 1922 at Healdton, Oklahoma the daughter of J.W. “Bill” and Coreen (Sands) Moon. She spent most of her younger years in the Panhandle of Texas. She graduated from White Deer High School in 1941 in White Deer Texas. She then moved to Amarillo, Texas where in 1942 she married Junior “J.R.” Shultz. They moved to Dodge City in 1946. In October of 1956 their son Barry was born.
Gloria worked as a legal secretary in Dodge City for over 30 years for James A. Williams Law Firm. She was a very strong person, battling and winning against two forms of cancer, macular degeneration, congestive heart failure and lymphadema of her leg. She never gave up and always had a positive and happy demeanor through life. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She cherished and dearly loved her family until the day she left this earth to be with her Heavenly Father.
Gloria later married Clifton E. Cummings of Hemphill, Texas. Gloria dearly loved her family in East Texas and was a beloved step mother to Clifton Cummings, Jr.,Velton Cummings, DeWey Cummings (preceded in death) and Cindy (Cummings) Hall, in addition to several step grandchildren. They resided in Hemphill until his death in April of 1992. She then moved to Larned, Kansas to be with her son and family.
In June of 1996 she married James “Jim” W. Strother of Keyes, Oklahoma in Larned, Kansas by Pastor David Johnson. They then moved to Keyes, Oklahoma and lived there until July of 2007 when they moved to Lansing, Kansas and resided with her son and daughter in law, Marsha. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Keyes, Oklahoma and previously had been a long time member of the First Christian Church of Dodge City.
Survivors include her husband, James “Jim” W. Strother of Leavenworth; one son, Barry Shultz and wife Marsha of Lansing; two grandchildren, Jennifer Jernander of Crestview, Florida but currently deployed in Afghanistan and Richard Shultz and wife Adri of Wichita; one great granddaughter, Adelaide Shultz; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gloria was preceded in death by her former husband, J.R. Shultz; her parents; two brothers, Earl Moon and Johnny Moon; three sisters, Billie Wilson, Martha “Pet” Buchanan, and Betty Ruth Bently; one sister-in-law, Twila Moon; and one brother-in-law, Jim Bentley.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with Mr. David Johnson presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 4 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Keyes, Oklahoma in care of the funeral home.
