GCPD Officer in collision while attempting a traffic stop

Garden City, Kan.–A Garden City Police Department Officer was involved in a collision when responding and attempting to conduct a traffic stop on a speeding motorcyclist, according to the GCPD.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday evening, the Officer was in the 1200 block of N. Taylor Avenue when they heard and observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed from W. Kansas Avenue continuing westbound on W. Buffalo Jones Avenue. The Officer activated their lights and sirens and headed after the motorcycle to conduct a traffic stop. As the Officer was attempting to catch up to the motorcycle, a Ford Explorer was stopped in the left lane of traffic waiting to turn south onto Pearl Street, and the Officer passed the Explorer on the left as that vehicle proceeded to turn south. The impact of the collision caused the Officer to lose control of their vehicle, striking a guide wire of a utility pole before coming to rest in the middle of the road.

The driver of the Explorer and the Officer were taken to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Traffic was diverted from the area for nearly two hours as law enforcement completed the accident investigation, and both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The motorcycle continued traveling on W. Jones Avenue and was not located.
