GCHS wrestling fills up All-WAC team
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-We’ve got plenty more in the tank; those are the words of Garden City High School Athletic Director Martin Segovia on whether his team has aspirations of filling up the trophy case in the hallway leading to the gym. After all he watched Carlos Prieto and the Buffaloes repeat as 6A state champs. But on Thursday-it was a different team that was well represented by the Buffs.
Two-time defending state champs Michael Prieto (44-2) and Tevin Briscoe (33-3) headlined a list of seven wrestlers who were selected to the All-Wac first team.
Efrain Sanchez (106), Alec Castillo (132), Chris Adler (145), Zac Finch (160) and Montana Fuller (285) all joining them.
Jesse Nunez (152), Sammy Reyes (195) and Benny Hernandez (220) honorable mentions.
Dodge City’s Clay Weil and Zach Cook also made the first team. Junior Jhett Ostrom, freshman Dylan Servis, sophomore Tristan Hampton, freshman Tyler Garcia and senior Jaquan Graves were all honorable mentions.
Garden City’s Carlos Prieto was named conference coach of the year. Preston Weigel from Hays garnering wrestler of the year honors.
