Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – It was a classic in County battle last night at the Garden, as the Garden City Buffalo Basketball teams split games in a non-conference match-up with the Holcomb Longhorns. In the girls game it was two ranked teams going head to head, as the 6A No. 8 Lady Buffs faced the No. 8 Longhorns out of the 3A ranks and the duel lived up to its billing. The Lady Longhorns came out of the locker room firing away with 6 treys in the first half alone and 5 of those from junior Kylee Amos, as she led all scorers in the first half with 14 points giving Holcomb a 5 point lead 32-27 at intermission. Garden City had played some very good defense on the rest of the Longhorns, but failed to stop Amos. In the 2nd half the Lady Buffs kicked up their defensive pressure even more, creating eleven 2nd half turnovers on Holcomb and generating some quick baskets and also stopping Amos with only 5 2nd half points. Garden City outscored Holcomb 40-22 in the final 16 minutes of play led by four players with double figures, including sophomore Jayme Bernbeck with a game high 21, senior post player Johna McClelland dropped in 15 and collected 7 boards, junior Taryn Tempel chipped in 12 and junior point guard Jacksennie Tornero added 10 giving the Buffs a 67-54 victory over the Lady Longhorns sending their record to 12-3 on the season. Garden City Coach David Upton comments on their great defensive play throughout the game.

In the nightcap boys game it was a much different story, as the Holcomb Longhorns had more fire power from the field and a strong inside game to beat the No. 8 Buffaloes 70-59. After a close first quarter with Garden City leading by one 13-12, it all changed in quarter number two with the Longhorns lighting it up from outside and limiting the Buffaloes to just four 2nd quarter points and led at the break 29-17. The 2nd half was much the same with the inside presence of senior Max Ramsey who finished the night with 17 points and senior point guard Tyler LaSalle scoring all 17 of his points in the 2nd half draining 3 consecutive 3’s, and sophomore Blake Richmeir chipped in 12. The Buffaloes were led in scoring by senior Bo Banner producing a career high 26 points, junior Hunter Delgado added 10. With the loss the Buffaloes drop to 10-5 on the season. Garden City Coach Jacy Holloway talks about playing with adversity and giving credit to an extremely talented and tough Holcomb Longhorn team.
