GCHS Buffalo 2012 Basketball Teams Honored at Banquet

The 2011-2012 Basketball seasons for Garden City High School officially came  to a close last night at the Clarion Inn.  With around 200 hundred in attendance, Lady Buffalo Coach David Upton and boys Coach Jacy Holloway honored their teams and individuals for their accomplishments on the year.  The event was sponsored by the 6th man club and the Buffalo Basketball Booster Club.  The Garden City girls completed the season at 13-9, their best record since 1994 and the Lady Buffs finished runner-up in the Western Athletic Conference to Hays with a 5-3 record and runner-up in the 6A Sub-State Tournament at Hutchinson after a slim margin loss to Wichita South in the title game.  Senior Kristen Heiman and sophomore Taryn Tempel were selected as co-defensive players of the year, Heiman also received the teams MVP and INAM award (Its Not About Me), both Tempel and Heiman were chosen as 1st team All-WAC for 2012.  Tempel was named the offensive player of the year with an average of 12 points per game and received the heart award.  The hustle award was a tie with sophomore Alex Miller and senior Shelby Heatwole, while the most improved player was junior Abby Campbell and newcomer/freshman of the year went to Jayme Bernbeck.  Coach Upton was extremely pleased the way his young ladies played throughout the year and praised them for their ability to be resilient when the game was on the line.  For the boys, Coach Jacy Holloway talked about his teams tough schedule that helped prepare them for the long season, as the Buffaloes finished at 9-12 overall 6-2 in WAC and runner-up to Dodge City.  Coach Holloway recognized senior Jake Curran as the teams leading scorer with 14 points per game, his selection to the All-WAC first team and All-State Honorable Mention.  Senior Braden Taylor and junior Austin Terpstra were also selected as All-WAC Honorable Mention.  Five Seniors leave the team this year including, Cameron Coyle, Gerado Holguin, Jeremy Ensz, Braden Taylor and Jake Curran, who has committed to play Football and Basketball at Garden City Community College next year.  Coach Holloway praised his seniors for their hard work, dedication and leadership.
