GCHS boys open team camp (Audio)
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Technically we’re still more than five months away from Garden City tipping off the 2014 basketball season in Hays. But that doesn’t mean Jacy Holloway’s team can’t get a head start on their ultimate destination.
This week, the fifth-year head coach and his squad opened up their annual summer team camp at the New Garden. The goal: a return-trip to state.
“We want to get back there,” emphasized junior guard Jared Koster. “We definitely have a shot again this year.”
Koster is entering his third season as one of Holloway’s back-court marksmen. But his role will definitely expand with the program losing five players to graduation.
“We’re going to need those guys to step up,” Holloway said. “We lost a lot off last year’s team. The young guys are going to have to learn fast.”
Senior Caleb Tramp is the wildcard of the bunch. Not only is he athletically gifted, but his attributes lend to a potential landing spot at a Division-I school.
“He has to get into D-I mode,” Holloway said. “As his work ethic improves, so will his game.”
Tramp had some spectacular moments during his junior campaign. There was the second-half explosion in a near-upset bid of second-ranked Hays in February. How about the 19 point, 13-rebound performance in game at Great Bend? But with that came a lot of inconsistency like his 2-for-11 showing in a loss to Holcomb.
“I need to get better defensively,” Tramp said. “We’ll be better this year.”
