GCHS Art Students Receive Awards

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City High School art students participated in the Twenty-Fifth Annual Western Kansas Scholastic Art (WKSA) Competition and Exhibition 2019 and recently received word on how they ranked in the competition. The winners work will be on display at the Baker Arts Center in Liberal, Kansas January 27th – February 22nd.
Garden City High School winners include:
Gold Key winner is Angelina West “View From Within” Oil Painting
Silver Key winners include: Sara Deal “Heart” Mixed Media, Garrett Smith “Charlie” Drawing and Illustration, and Alejandra Villarreal “Sleeping Fawn” Mixed Media
Honorable Mentions include: David Cabral “Humanoid at Dawn” Drawing & Illustration, Raquel Garcia “Good Side” Drawing & Illustration, Raquel Garcia “Split” Drawing & Illustration, Celest Hurtado “Japanese Street Art” Drawing & Illustration, Crystal Cruz “Giraffe Scientist” Painting, Paige Gigot “Weeping Willow” Painting, Alejandra Villarreal “1950’s Chevy” Painting, and Alejandra Villarreal “Tarahumaras”.
The exhibition will include 216 art works of all kinds; photography, sculpture, metals, glass, drawings, paintings, ceramics, graphics and much more. WKSA is pleased to announce that there are five American Visions nominees, 44 Gold Key, 62 Silver Key plus 110 Honorable Mention awards that will be on display.
The WKSA is an affiliate of the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards show and all American Vision and Gold Key award winning artworks go on and compete nationally. The WKSA Awards contest is open to students in grades 7-12 from the following 31 counties: Cheyenne, Clark, Decatur, Finney, Ford, Gove, Graham, Grant, Gray, Greeley, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Kearny, Lane, Logan, Meade, Morton, Ness, Norton, Rawlings, Scott, Seward, Sheridan, Sherman, Stanton, Stevens, Thomas, Trego, Wallace, and Wichita. This year there were 526 total entries from 21 teachers from 18 participating schools.
