GCCC To Host Author & Philanthropist

Philanthropy Misunderstood

Garden City Native Bob Hopkins to Discuss Purpose of Philanthropy

Garden City Community College will host author and area native Bob Hopkins on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, to promote his new book and share his discoveries about the gift of giving back.

Hopkins, a 1961 graduate of Garden City High School, recently published “Philanthropy Misunderstood: One Hundred Plus Stories from People Who Helped Change the World.”

Hopkins, a professor of business communications at the University of Texas at Arlington, said the 256-page book is based on his conversations with more than 100 people he has met over the course of his personal and professional life from all over the globe.

“It’s a book about people who do real philanthropy, which is love of mankind,” he said.

In the spirit of his book, Hopkins is planning to donate a portion of its proceeds to establish a scholarship for Garden City High School students through the GCCC Endowment Association, according to Executive Director Jeremy Gigot.

Gigot said the scholarship is being established to honor the late Dean Nolte, a former USD 457 teacher and principal, who made a positive impact in Hopkins’ life. Mr. Nolte is survived by his wife, Norma Nolte.

Friday’s book signing begins at 4 p.m. in the Endowment Room in the Beth Tedrow Student Center and is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. To learn more about Hopkins or purchase a copy of his book visit https://philanthropymisunderstood.org/.
