GCCC to Get New Football/Soccer Field and Track

Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – After a 4-2 vote from the Garden City Commmunity College Board of Trustees on Tuesday night, the Football and Soccer programs will get new facilities to help build their programs into national contenders. It has been the topic of discussion for many years in regard to athletic facilities being a very important tool in recruitment of top athletes and solutions for building quality programs. GCCC will also resurrect their Track program that has been absent for many years. The Trustees approval allows the college administration to move forward in securing Hellas Construction from Austin, Texas and negotiate terms for the $2.6 million on-campus Football/Soccer field and Track.

For the past several years the GCCC Football and Soccer teams have practiced and played their games at the old Memorial Stadium on the campus of Horace Goode Middle School (formerly Garden City High School). Its time for the college to have their own home on-campus facilities, addressing safety concerns and keeping the Broncbuster programs competing and rising to the same level and above as a number of the programs in the tough Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Adding a new 8 lane track will also be beneficial for the student athletes who desire to compete in both Football and Track and will compliment the recruitment of those athletes wanting to compete in both sports. Community members, coaches, staff and President, Dr. Herbert Swinder have identified this venture as being a win win situation for the GCCC Football, Soccer and Track programs as well as the student body and their intramural programs. GCCC is in the process of searching for one coach to mentor both the Track and Cross Country programs for next year.
