GCCC honoring two Phi Theta Kappa Students

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City Community College Phi Theta Kappa honor society will honor two students during the Annual All-Kansas Academic Team Luncheon. The luncheon is being held February 15, 2018 in Topeka, Kansas.

Alpha Xi Upsilon members Devyn Chapman and Michelle McPherson will be honored with a medal, certificate, and a $300 stipend. Being named to the All-Kansas Academic Team guarantees them a minimum of a $1000 scholarship at one of the six Regents University, Washburn University, and several private colleges in Kansas.

Fifty-seven students are being recognized with All-Kansas Academic Team Honors for community colleges. Students from Kansas two-year colleges were named to this year’s team in recognition of academic achievement, leadership, and community service. The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees, and the presidents of the state’s community colleges sponsor the All-Kansas Academic team. Students were nominated by their respective college and are now eligible for the All-USA Academic Team.

Garden City Community College student, Devyn Chapman, is an Exercise Science major with a 3.8 GPA. Devyn is from Garden City, KS and is the son of Steve and Stephanie Chapman. Devyn plans to transfer to Wichita State University to pursue a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and works in the Super Circuit. Devyn helps lead a Bible study group on campus and volunteers for Miles of Smiles.

Michelle McPherson is a Nursing major with a 3.8 GPA. Michelle is from Lakin, KS and her parents are Brenda Padilla and Julio Esquivel. Michelle plans to transfer to Fort Hays State University. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and is a certified tutor in Algebra and Biology at the Comprehensive Learning Center on Campus. Michelle is a member of the STEM Club and is involved in the College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP).

Phi Theta Kappa is the national honor society of the two-year college. Students must have at least a 3.5GPA or better to be accepted into the organization. The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is the promotion of scholarship, the development of leadership and service, and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students.
