Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City Community College Department of Public Safety will hold the second annual “Shoot for Scholarships” on Saturday, October 21, at 9:00 a.m., at the Sand and Sage Gun Range, 15605 E. Rock Pit Road. The shoot is a pistol, rifle and shotgun competition. Cost for the event is $50.00 per person. Participants will form three man teams, and the GCCC Department of Public Safety will add a student to round out each team. Participants must be 16 years of age or older. Sixteen to seventeen year olds must have a parent present at the event. Check-in for the event will be from 8:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. A safety briefing will follow check-in at 9:00 a.m., and is required to participate in the event.

Participants must provide their own weapons and ammo. Eye protection, ear protection, and a hat is required. Participants will also need 50 rounds of pistol ammo, 50 rifle rounds, and 12 shotgun rounds. Pistols allowed are 9mm, .38, .40, .45 and .357. Rifles allowed are 30 caliber or lower, with no metal core or green tip ammo. The course is designed for AR duty style rifles. Shotgun ammo must be lead shot—not steel, up to 12 g, 71/2 shot only. There will also be .22 side matches.

GCCC Criminal Justice Instructor, Brandy Unruh, organized the event last year to help students with scholarship money. “Shoot for Scholarships is a fun event that directly impacts the Department of Public Safety students. Many of them do not receive scholarships because they are not athletes or in other activities—this money goes to help DPS students directly. On the Criminal Justice side, these scholarships will help our TEL Competition Team members who enroll in extra hours in order to be able to compete at our Regional Competition. This is a way for local agencies to meet students who may later apply for a job in their organization,” said Unruh.

Partners helping to raise money for scholarships for GCCC Department of Public Safety students are Garden City Police Department, Sand and Sage Gun Club, Finney County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol and Garden City Trap & Skeet Club. Advance registration for the event is preferred. You can register at www.gcccendowment.com . For more information, call Brandy Unruh, GCCC Criminal Justice Instructor, at 620-276-9503.
