GCCC Has New Golf Coach and Added Three New Recruits for This Year

Garden City, KS-A year after the men’s golf program was reinstated at Garden City Community College there will be a different look to the program. This will include a new head coach and a number of new players. Former Broncbuster softball coach Phil Terpstra will take over the reigns as the head golf coach, and he has announced the commitment of three Garden City High School athletes to compete with the golf team. Terpstra will be moving back into an athletic role after two years out of the department. He has been a long time employee at Garden City Community College, first coming to Garden City as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team as well as the assistant softball coach. After a year, he took over the head softball coaching position. He led the Broncbuster softball program for 13 years. He now will come back to the athletic department in a head coaching role as well as keeping his teaching position in the math department. Assistant coach Cole Wasinger will continue in his role as the assistant coach for the GCCC golf program. Former head coach Ryan Martin will serve as a swing consultant for the Broncbuster golf program. “I am happy to get the opportunity to coach golf at Garden City and have access to two great golfing facilities. The two courses give us a huge advantage in recruiting quality golfers to our program,” said Terpstra. “Cole and Ryan are also very valuable resources that I will be able to lean on to make the program achieve at a high level. When Dennis Perryman first talked to me about coming to GCCC this is what I thought I was going to coach. 15 years later I now get to coach a sport that I love.” As he has taken over the position he has also announced that three Garden City High School golfers will be a part of the Broncbuster program. Nick Mann, Scott Bulkley, and Boone Wells have all decided to be a part of the GCCC golf program. All three GCHS grads were a part of the team that qualified for the 6A state tournament in May. “All three will make us a better team because they will be expected to compete for one of our top five positions,” said Terpstra. “It’s very important for us to keep local talent at home to be a part of the Garden City Community College program.”
