Wichita, KS(westernkansasnews.com) “Best conference in the country” and “we’re young” would be the theme of the 2017 KJCCC Football Media Day. Those words were uttered by almost every coach as they took to the podium to address the room.

Reigning National Champion Garden City Community College Head Coach Jeff Sims spoke last  as the Broncbusters were picked to win the league again in 2017. Sims stated that as of today after listening to the other coaches that he does not feel like his team is the best in the league. Sims stated that their team goal will be to the best team on the field each week.

Sims also thought the predicted order of finish was interesting because last year GCCC was picked to finish in the bottom half of the league and went on to go undefeated and win the National Championship. He also praised the two new hires to his coaching staff. The Broncbusters brought in Josh Beekman to coach the Offensive Line, Beekman was a four year starter at Boston College and went on to play for the Chicago Bears. Leon Wright was hired from LSU.

Dodge City Community College Head Coach Gary Thomas was the second to last coach to speak because his Conquistadors are picked to finish second in the league this year.

Thomas said he is fortunate to have most of his coaching staff this year. He highlighted the teams recent success over the past few years after the program had been struggling. Thomas also praised the new administration at DCCC.

Coach Thomas went on to say he thinks the Conquistadors will have a good team this year, but noted that in the Jayhawk Conference that doesn’t necessarily mean more wins. According to Thomas the overall talent level is up at DCCC. He also mentioned that the Conquistadors will have six starters back on offense, but a lot of new faces on defense.
