GC Elite just that; take Ulysses tourney by storm

legion new

Ulysses, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-So what if Garden City’s senior legion team couldn’t find any competition over the past two weeks. Their mold and confidence was built in the summer of 2013.

After two weeks of no games, Lyle Befort’s squad was finally back in action, taking down Liberal 9-2 Saturday night in the championship game of the Harbour Tournament.

“We’re pitching very good right now,” Befort said. “We’re throwing strikes and keeping hitters on their heels. Plus our defense was great.”

The father’s day weekend blowout started when Marcus Zapata singled home two runs in the top of the first followed by Mario Montoya’s RBI hit.

The Elite (7-0) added to their lead in the second starting with Jacob Rivas’s run-scoring double to center field. Then Thomas Solorio singled home Rivas to make it 5-0.

Liberal countered with two runs in the bottom of the second before the Elite plated four more in the fourth. Rivas, Zapata and Montoya slapped run-scoring hits-giving Garden City a 9-2 cushion.

Elite hurler Daniel Flores was nearly flawless-allowing just two runs while scattering five hits in four innings.
